What is Ally for Moodle?

Screenshot of Ally dashboard

Ally is an accessibility tool which integrates into all teaching and learning courses on the Digital Learning Environment in Moodle.

Ally scans all original content in Moodle and performs a series of steps to make the content more accessible. Staff will then be provided with a detailed insight and guidance on how to improve the accessibility of their content. All course files and content will have coloured “dials” next to them called Ally Indicators, which indicate the level of accessibility on the file.

In addition to providing guidance on making content accessible, Ally also allows students to take control of how they consume the content allowing them to download a file in a variety of formats convenient to them. How your students engage with  learning content is personal, whether they access content via a smartphone or iPad or if they like to make digital notes on PDF’s, Ally automatically generates alternative formats for the students to download and consume their teaching material in a personalised manner.

How does it work?

Ally works seamlessly with Moodle to gauge the accessibility of your content. Ally provides guidance and tips for lasting improvements to your content accessibility.

You will receive feedback on the accessibility of your content. You will be able to improve content accessibility with Ally’s step-by-step instructions. In addition to providing you with insight to your content accessibility, Ally automatically creates alternative versions of your files. This allows students to choose the type of file they want that best suits their needs. While you’re in the process of improving files, students still access alternative copies.
