What is a Subject View Course in Moodle

A Subject View Course is a stand-alone course in Moodle that is not registered in UNIT-e as it is not connected to a Programme or a Module. A good example of this is could be a Laboratory Technician in a School or a Faculty who requires students to complete some preparatory work in order to use the laboratory equipment safely. The course is required across several programmes and modules in that Faculty or School and needs to be visible to all students to complete.

Please note that the Subject View Courses will be created under broad subject areas and be viewable by everyone.

Please also note that the participation under a course like this within Moodle, including completing activities (such as quizzes, wikis, forums, assignments, and so on) requires the students to be fully enrolled on it. There are various ways of doing this as:

  • it can be enabled through a ‘Self-Enrol’ option which can then be open to all University users,
  • it can be limited using an enrolment password that you would send to people to enrol themselves, or
  • it can use the manual enrolment method, which means that you would need to enrol each individual, including students and staff.

A key element of the DLE is allowing students, for example, to submit coursework (via the ‘Assignment’ activity) and ensuring University regulations for assessments are adhered to. This means that the assignment information in UNIT-e can be linked to the ‘Assignment’ activity in Moodle, which in turn is linked to the Coursework Receipting System (CRS) and extenuating circumstances (EC) processes. Grades are also fed directly into UNIT-e from Moodle. A similar rule and process applies for the ‘Quiz’ activity. However, Subject View Courses do not link in with these processes, therefore the assessments within a Subject View Course will not be linked into university systems and processes. They cannot be counted into the final grades of students under different modules or programmes as these are stand-alone courses.

How to request a Subject View Course

Step 1. Contact the Service Desk

If you think that you require a Subject View Course, then please contact the Service Desk via IT Self-Service application which can be found on the UoP machines, or over the phone 01752/(5)88588.

They will take some details and pass them on to the Digital Education team who will then contact you to discuss your requirements and ensure a Subject View Course is the right option for you.

Step 2. More details

Once you are certain you require a Subject View Course, then you should provide the Digital Education team with details of the course, such as its purpose, content, and so on.

You will need to nominate a course name and Course Leader that you want to give to the Subject View Course.

Step 3. We will create the course for you

Once the Subject View Course has been approved, the Service Desk will then create the course, enrol you as the ‘Leader’ and send you the course details.

Step 4. Setting up a Subject View Course

Once your new content course has been set up, the Course Leader will have access to it, therefore, we would recommend doing the following additional steps in order to make it ready for your students:

  • The Course Leader will need to add other lecturers and faculty support staff to the DLE site, so they can access and edit the content, up to their preferences. For more information about the process, please read the following article.
  • Based on the enrolment method decision of staff, students can enrol themselves (with or without an enrolment key), or can be manually enrolled on the content course in order to fully participate, including viewing resources and completing the given tasks.
  • For the most part, Subject View Courses behave in the same way as traditional programme and module courses, therefore, the content can then be populated on the DLE site.
    • Before you start to populate the content on the DLE site, please make sure you carefully plan your content structure and your content matches the minimum Module requirements. The course format should also align with the course structure.
    • Please note, the Module or Programme Information block is not supported by Subject View Courses.
    • If wish to add new activities and resources, then please read the following article.
    • If you wish to rollover the content from the same Subject View Course that was running, for example, last year, instead of adding new activities and resources, then please read the following article.
    • If you wish to share Panopto videos with your students, then you will need to add a Panopto block to your DLE site, provision it, move the recordings to the relevant course folder, and then you also need to approve each individual video one by one in order to share it with your students. You can also add these videos as activities.
    • If wish to add a Reading List to your DLE site, then please read the following article, however, as it is a Subject View Course, please also contact the Library Services.
    • If wish to add assessments to your DLE site, then please read the following article for quizzes and the following one for online submissions. Please note that these activities cannot be linked to UNIT-e as the content course is not attached to any Programme or Module within the student record system.
    • If wish to add other interactive activities to your DLE site, then we would recommend using H5P, Forums, Scheduler, Checklist, Choice tool, and many more.
    • We also recommend checking the Accessibility score for your content in order to meet the minimum requirements for online education.

If you have any further questions related to the content structure within Moodle, please do not hesitate to contact the Digital Education team.
