How to create an online submission in Moodle that uses pass/fail marking

Overview

Scales are a way of evaluating or rating a students’ performance. Scales may be used in Forums, Glossaries and Assignments for rating and/or grading a student’s activity.

How to create a scale to your Moodle course

  1. Sign in to your Moodle account and select the course where you would like to add a scale (pass/fail).
  2. In the secondary menu click ‘Grades’

  1. Click the drop down menu and click on ‘Scales’

  1. Click ‘Add a new scale’ (this is where you set pass/fail)

  1. Enter a name of the scale
  2. Enter a Scale. You can use as many options here as you require. You must order the comma separated elements in increasing order of value. For example Fail, Pass or Strongly Disagree, Disagree, Neither agree nor disagree, Agree, Strongly Agree.
  3. Add a description (this is for the tutors benefit)
  4. Click Save

Attaching your scale in your module

  1. Navigate back to your module page
  1. When setting up an assignment (see the Set Up guides for more information), scroll to ‘Grade’

  1. Using the drop down ‘type’ menu, select ‘scale’, then find your custom scale

  1. Click Save and return to course
