Where and how to insert images into a Mentimeter presentation?

Overview

Mentimeter is a cloud-based polling tool to interact with students through presentations in real-time using a mobile phone or other device connected to the internet. Mentimeter visualises the response data from participants which can be displayed live but it can also be hidden until all students have submitted a response. Additionally, Mentimeter presentations are also capable of displaying images for aesthetic or content-related purposes.

In this article, we will show you where and how you can upload images to your Mentimeter presentation.

Free resources to use for selecting images

When you upload images to your Mentimeter presentation, please make sure these images are copyright-free and sharp enough with high resolution. As such, we recommend using the following free image resources if your School does not have a bank of images:

In most of them, you will be able to use additional filters for searching for appropriate images. These filters could be, for example, photos, icons or vectors only, free or restricted access images, and many more.

Places to insert images in a presentation

Mentimeter also allows you to upload images to various places, such as:

  • Creating interactions with images which can be useful to visualise a question that might be complicated or complex to understand. You could use graphical elements, for example, logos, brands, packaging, and many more.
  • Images as part of a question can be useful, for example, in case it is a hotspot question type, such as ‘Pin on image’.
  • Images as part of an answer choice can be useful, for example, in icebreakers, flashcards, and many more. To get some tips about in what situations you can use images for Multiple-Choice question types, please visit the following Mentimeter help material. Please note, some of the content/slide types do not currently support this.

For more information about these places, please visit the following Mentimeter webpage.

Accepted image formats

Wherever you would like to upload images, these can be in the format of static images or motion images (such as gifs). The currently supported file formats are JPEG, PNG, and GIF; whilst the maximum file size cannot exceed 15 MB per file.

Any image you wish to upload to your Mentimeter presentation will look the best in the aspect ratio that is similar to your presentation screen ratio, however, in certain cases, you might want to use other dimensions. The standard ratio for most screens is 16:9 or 4:3.

For more information about the ratios for images on different content/slide types, please visit the following Mentimeter help material.

How to insert images into a presentation

Regardless of the fact where you wish to upload your selected image, such as for questions, potential answers, layout, or interaction purposes, the process will be the same.

Once you click on the image icon in one of these places, a new window will open with the following available options:

  • you can either upload an image from your machine by selecting the file directly from your file explorer or using the drag-and-drop method;
  • you can navigate to Mentimeter’s ‘Image library’ which would is fed by Unsplash; or
  • you can navigate to ‘Gifs’ to select a motion image from Giphy which is another embedded image resource.

Regardless of the fact which method you will choose to go with, you will have the option to re-crop the image if the automatic crop does not fit your needs. We also recommend providing alternative text for each image, in case your students have unstable/weak internet connections where some of the images will not be displayed on their devices. Once you are happy with the setup, please click on the ‘Save’ button to save the process.

Please note, if the image would be the background for the slide, then it might not need to be cropped; however, for images to be added to questions or answers, most likely they will need to be resized to make sure they will be properly displayed on student screens. In the section ‘Accepted image formats’, you can get further information about the ratios.

Please also note, images that have been added to the presentation as backgrounds for slides, you will also be able to customise their layout according to the displayed content. For more information about the process, please read the following supporting material.

If you wish to re-size or update the image, including editing the alternative text, you will need to click on the image (and on a few occasions, on the ‘Edit’ button after it) to be brought back to the image picker of Mentimeter.
