The majority of the setup process is the same for each type of online submission, there will just be a specific section in each that will be different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can set up:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Individual submission points (shown below)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/digi-ed.uk\/support\/article\/creating-group-submissions-in-moodle\/\">Group submission points<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/digi-ed.uk\/support\/article\/how-to-add-an-empty-submission-point-to-your-moodle-course\/\">Empty submission points<\/a> used as assessment placeholders to upload grades but not allowing students to submit files<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also use different configurations for these submission points, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Numerical values for marking strategy in the range from 0 to 100% (shown below)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/digi-ed.uk\/support\/article\/how-to-create-an-online-submission-in-moodle-that-uses-pass-fail-marking\/\">Pass\/Fail marking strategy<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/digi-ed.uk\/support\/article\/creating-a-rubric-with-moodle\/\">Moodle Rubric<\/a> marking strategy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/digi-ed.uk\/support\/article\/turnitin-settings\/\">Turnitin marking tools<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Media features, e.g. for students to <a href=\"https:\/\/digi-ed.uk\/support\/article\/creating-an-online-submission-in-moodle-for-students-to-submit-video-or-audio\/\">submit video\/audio files<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/digi-ed.uk\/support\/article\/allocating-student-submissions-to-lecturers\/\">Marker allocations<\/a>, so that each marker has a specific group of students to mark<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Restrictions to restrict access to the submission points (e.g. for <a href=\"https:\/\/dle-uat.plymouth.ac.uk\/mod\/url\/view.php?id=1613823\">referrals or alternative assessments<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to set up an Assignment in a Moodle course<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To add a \u2018Assignment\u2019 activity to your course, please follow the steps below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sign in to your Moodle account and select the course where you would like to add the \u2018Assignment\u2019 activity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click on the \u2018Edit mode\u2019 button and then select a section where you would like it to be located.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click on the \u2018Add an activity or resource\u2019 button and then select \u2018Assignment\u2019 from the popping-up window.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You will be directed to the settings of the activity where you can change the following things.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">General<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u2018Assignment name\u2019: This will be what the students see as the link to the online submission point. Please enter a useful title for it. Please do not use the module code in the submission point\u2019s title.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u2018Description\u2019: Please keep this brief; you can enter details such as permitted file size limit, number of files, file types; deadline for the assessment, date to publish results, etc. If you have the assessment details in a module handbook, you can use this space to remind students to look there for the information. If you add a description to the assessment, please tick the box below this field, so that it will be displayed on the course page.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u2018Activity instructions\u2019: The actions you would like the student to complete for this assignment, similar to the \u2018Description\u2019 field but this is only shown in the submission page where a student edits and submits their assignment. Please note, any submissions made after the deadline will be tagged as \u2018late submissions\u2019 in the DLE.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u2018Cut-off date\u2019: Similar to the \u2018Due date\u2019, it is used to set up a deadline but after this date, students cannot make submissions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u2018Grades &amp; feedback release date\u2019: The date when you will release the feedback and grades to the students. Please note, this information is hidden from students and can be only used to receive a reminder e-mail from the DLE that you are expected to release the results.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u2018Always show description\u2019: Please keep this box enabled at all times as the DLE will then remind your students about the technical details (e.g. permitted number of files) when they are about to make a submission.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"716\" height=\"438\" src=\"https:\/\/digi-ed.uk\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/01-2025-06-02T150028.695.png\" alt=\"Screenshot of the \u2018Availability\u2019 section (highlighted) within a submission point.\" class=\"wp-image-8166\" srcset=\"https:\/\/digi-ed.uk\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/01-2025-06-02T150028.695.png 716w, https:\/\/digi-ed.uk\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/01-2025-06-02T150028.695-300x184.png 300w, https:\/\/digi-ed.uk\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/01-2025-06-02T150028.695-50x31.png 50w, https:\/\/digi-ed.uk\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/01-2025-06-02T150028.695-60x37.png 60w, https:\/\/digi-ed.uk\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/01-2025-06-02T150028.695-100x61.png 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 716px) 100vw, 716px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Submission types<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u2018Submission types\u2019 which can be:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u2018File submissions\u2019 for regular files (e.g. documents, PDFs, presentations, etc)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u2018Video Assignment\u2019 for media files (e.g. videos)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u2018Online text\u2019 which can be used for students to type their work in the DLE (we recommend allowing \u2018File submissions\u2019 for this instead)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Combination of all (if all are expected, e.g. a PowerPoint presentation, a video file and a brief description of the submission)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u2018Maximum number of uploaded files\u2019: We highly recommend restricting this from 20 to the appropriate maximum files we can expect students to submit. Please note, this setting only refers to the \u2018File submissions\u2019 box. If \u2018Video Assignment\u2019 is ticked, this is by default restricted to 1 video file only.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u2018Maximum submission size\u2019: You only need to increase this from default up to 1 GB if heavier file sizes are expected to be submitted, e.g. PowerPoint presentations, Adobe files, AutoCAD files, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u2018Accepted file types\u2019: We highly recommend using this feature and restricting the accepted file types for the \u2018File submissions\u2019 box to the appropriate file types (via the \u2018Choose\u2019 button) to ensure assessors can access the files regardless of the operational system they use (e.g. Windows, iOS or Linux).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-ht-blocks-messages wp-block-hb-message wp-block-hb-message--withicon is-style-info\">Please note, for videos, we recommend using the \u2018Video Assignment\u2019 box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td>Documents<\/td><td>.pdf, .doc and .docx<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Presentations<\/td><td>.ppt, .pptx, .pps and .ppsx<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Spreadsheets<\/td><td>.csv, .xls and .xlsx<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Images<\/td><td>.jpg, .jpeg and .png (if they cannot be part of other files (e.g. documents)<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Archives<\/td><td>.rar and .zip<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Audios<\/td><td>.mp3<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-ht-blocks-messages wp-block-hb-message wp-block-hb-message--withicon is-style-info\">For student help materials about making all types of submissions in the DLE, please visit <a href=\"https:\/\/dle-uat.plymouth.ac.uk\/course\/view.php?id=32227\">this course<\/a>. even if you do not wish to use them all or at all as you will mark via <a href=\"https:\/\/digi-ed.uk\/support\/subject\/turnitin\/\">Turnitin<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u2018Feedback comments\u2019: Allows you to type directly into a text box on the screen and is good for quick feedback comments.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u2018Feedback files\u2019: Allows allow you to attach a feedback file or an annotated version of the submission.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u2018Offline grading worksheet\u2019: You can find more information here about marking offline\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/digi-ed.uk\/support\/article\/marking-offline-in-moodle-using-bulk-download-and-upload-2\/\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u2018Comment inline\u2019: If Please note, if the activity is shown to students, they can only make submissions from the date set up for the \u2018Allow submissions from\u2019 setting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u2018Link to UNIT-e\u2019: You need to use this setting if it is a summative assessment where the final grades need to be transferred across UNIT-e.
