Overview<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Moodle allows you to use various resources and activities to build your course content which you may wish to connect as they often build on each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, you might want to share assessment information with your students via a \u2018Page\u2019 resource\u2019s text box and link previous lecture recordings and slides within this text. This helps students access all the relevant materials in one place. In such cases, you can connect resources and activities using the auto-linking method. Simply type the full name of the material you want to link and Moodle will automatically turn it into a clickable link that directs students to that resource or activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Please note that while you have the option to manually link materials using the link button (chain icon in the text formatting navigation bar of a text box), we do not recommend using this method for linking materials within the DLE. This is because these links will no longer work once the content is imported or rolled over to the next academic year\u2019s course. However, manual linking can still be used for external links.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you wish to automatically link existing resources or activities by using their names, please follow the steps below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Please note, by default this feature is disabled and so you will need to activate it first before you can use it via text boxes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enable auto-linking via Filters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

  1. Please navigate to the desired course homepage, select \u2018More\u2019 from the secondary navigation bar and then choose the \u2018Filters\u2019 option from the drop-down list.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    1. On the following page, please locate \u2018Activity names auto-linking\u2019 and set it to \u2018On\u2019. To finalise your action, please click on the \u2018Save changes\u2019 button.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      Please note, other filtering options will be displayed here, but please do not change these without liaising with our team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Add auto-linked names<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      1. Please ensure the resource or activity you want to link already exists within your course content and note its exact full name as it appears on your course page. In this instance, we will use \u2018Lecture 1 (recording\u2019) and \u2018Lecture 1 (slides)\u2019 within week 1.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

        1. Next, please navigate to the text box where you want to insert the links. In this example, we will use a \u2018Page\u2019 resource. Within the text box, please enter the full and exact name(s) of the material(s) you want to link. Please note the text doesn\u2019t look any different in edit view initially until you have saved it.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

          Please ensure spelling, capitalisation and punctuation match exactly. If you wish to customise the name, you must do this in the resource\/activity settings first and then return to the text box to add the updated name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          1. Once completed, please save the changes. Moodle will automatically detect these names and convert them into clickable links that take students directly to these materials. Please also preview the content and test the links to ensure they work correctly.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
