{"id":2446,"date":"2021-10-06T14:38:06","date_gmt":"2021-10-06T13:38:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/digi-ed.uk\/support\/?post_type=ht_kb&#038;p=2446"},"modified":"2025-05-28T09:28:41","modified_gmt":"2025-05-28T08:28:41","slug":"marking-online-using-the-blue-grade-button-grading-one-submission-at-a-time","status":"publish","type":"ht_kb","link":"https:\/\/digi-ed.uk\/support\/article\/marking-online-using-the-blue-grade-button-grading-one-submission-at-a-time\/","title":{"rendered":"Marking online using the grade button, grading one submission at a time"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Overview<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Moodle allows you to ask for student submissions (such as essays, presentations, or projects) by using the <a href=\"https:\/\/digi-ed.uk\/support\/article\/creating-an-online-submission-in-moodle\/\">\u2018Assignment\u2019 activity<\/a>.&nbsp;Once the deadline for the submission point has passed and you are ready to mark the uploaded files, you can then select between two main methods to add your grades and feedback:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Online, using the \u2018Grade\u2019 button<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Offline,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/digi-ed.uk\/support\/article\/marking-offline-in-moodle-using-bulk-download-and-upload-2\/\">downloading all the student submissions and the grading worksheet<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In this article, we will show you how to grade student submissions online by using the \u2018Grade\u2019 button in Moodle. This is the button that will navigate you to the Grading window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Using the Grade button<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To grade submissions by using the \u2018Grade\u2019 button, please follow the steps below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Please navigate to the Grading table via the \u2018Submissions\u2019 menu within the secondary navigation bar of the submission point and then select a student submission you wish to grade. Instead, we recommend going back to the Grading table to use the \u2018Grade\u2019 button next to next submission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img class=\"wp-block-heading\">Submission<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In this section, you will be able to find information regarding the student submission, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Submission status which indicates the time of the submission<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Marking workflow status which indicates the status of the grading process<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Editing permission which indicates whether the submissions are locked or can be still updated by students (if the deadline passed and the uploaded files get updated, they will be captured as late submissions in Moodle)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Name and date of the submission<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Turnitin Originality\/Similarity report<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Any comment added by the class=\"wp-block-heading\">Grade<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In this section, you will be able to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Add your mark to the submission (depending on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/digi-ed.uk\/support\/article\/creating-an-online-submission-in-moodle\/#grade\">grading strategy<\/a>\u00a0you selected to be used in the settings of the submission point, such as points, scales, or none)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Set the marking workflow for the submission (please note, the status will always be visible to your students, but the grade only at the stage of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/digi-ed.uk\/support\/article\/releasing-grades-and-feedback-in-moodle\/\">releasing the grades and feedback<\/a>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Allocated Marker (if you used the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/digi-ed.uk\/support\/article\/allocating-student-submissions-to-lecturers\/\">\u2018Marker\u2019 filter<\/a>\u00a0for submission point)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Current grade in the Gradebook if there is (also known as the \u2018Grades\u2019 menu which is invisible to your students and is not the identical with UNIT-e)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter ways<\/a>, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Feedback comments (such as textual information, images, audio, and videos)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Feedback files (such as documents, images, step<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-ht-blocks-messages wp-block-hb-message wp-block-hb-message--withicon is-style-info\">Please note, the \u2018Notify students\u2019 option only send an update to the student that the marking workflow has been updated (if you updated it from \u2018Not marked\u2019 to anything else). Please note, the actual results will be only visible to the students if you change the marking workflow to \u2018Released\u2019, as per instructed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/digi-ed.uk\/support\/article\/releasing-grades-and-feedback-in-moodle\/\">here<\/a>. Otherwise, regardless of the marking flow status you use, the results will be hidden from students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you added the grade and feedback to the submission, you will need to click on the \u2018Save changes\u2019 button. Please note, we do not recommend using the \u2018Save and show next\u2019 button.
